Have you ever wondered: Why do some people feel stuck and give up when faced with the same difficulties, while others see it as an opportunity to learn and move forward?
This difference does not come from external circumstances but originates from the mindset within.
1. The concept of "Growth Mindset" and "Fixed Mindset"
The concept of Growth Mindset and Fixed Mindset was initiated by Carol S. Dweck - Professor of Psychology at Stanford University. In 2006, in the research work Mindset: The New Psychology of Success, she pointed out how beliefs about intelligence and ability shape the entire personal development journey. Accordingly:
- Fixed Mindset: The belief that intelligence and ability are fixed, innate, and almost impossible to change.
- Growth Mindset: The belief that intelligence and ability can be changed and developed through effort and continuous learning.
Discovering Growth Mindset and Fixed Mindset has created a turning point in recognizing and evaluating the potential and development journey of each person.
2. Identifying Growth Mindset and Fixed Mindset
Fixed Mindset – Barrier hindering development
-
Belief: Intelligence and ability are innate and cannot be changed.
-
Attitude: Avoid challenges, fear failure will expose weaknesses.
-
Behavior: Easily discouraged and give up when facing difficulties.
-
Concept: See effort as useless or a sign of inadequacy.
-
Receiving feedback: Often defensive or ignoring opinions from others.
-
Perceiving the success of others: Easily self-deprecating or jealous.
Growth Mindset – Seed of infinite potential
-
Belief: Intelligence and ability can be trained and developed over time.
-
Attitude: See challenges as opportunities to learn and grow.
-
Behavior: Persevere in the face of difficulties, proactively find ways to overcome them.
-
Concept: Effort is the inevitable path to progress.
-
Receiving feedback: Open to listening and willing to adjust.
-
Perceiving the success of others: See it as a source of inspiration and lessons for yourself.
